Vibal Sponsors CEAP Region 4 Principals' Summit
by Carla Verayo and Katrina Bautista • April 21, 2010

Vibal Publishing House, Inc. partnered with the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) in organizing CEAP Region 4's very first Principals' Summit attended by more than 200 school principals and administrators at the Days Hotel in Tagaytay City on April 19-20, 2010.

The summit theme was ICT + UbD Level Up! Moving Education to the Next Level!, an upgraded repeat of Vibal’s seminar for Administrators held at Holiday Inn Clark Pampanga last January.  This aimed at orienting the participants on how Understanding by Design (UbD) can be implemented as a teaching approach in their respective schools, and the crucial role of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

On the first day of the summit, Dr. Lolita Andrada, Director of DepEd's Bureau of Secondary Education discussed what's new in the 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum and the vital integration of the Understanding by Design (UbD).

Dr. Lilia M. Rabago, former Dean of the UP College of Education and Vibal science education consultant, for her part allayed the anxiety of the participants in adopting UbD on her talk "Demystifying UbD." Dr. Rabago talked about how bridging instructional designs commonly used by teachers and UbD, consistent with the thinking of constructivists, enables learners (in this case, the teachers) to hook the new idea being learned (in this case, UbD) onto their existing knowledge framework.

The seminar-workshop on "Preparing the School for UbD: An Action Sharing" was given by La Salle Green Hills HS Principal Mrs. Amy Galang in the afternoon. She demonstrated to the administrators why it is logical for schools to consider adopting the design principles of the UbD framework and how the shift to UbD can be managed purposefully. In presenting strategies and actions to be considered in addressing the various phases of the UbD implementation, Galang reminded the participants that they should put in mind that the initial phase is still transitional.

Dr. Lloyd Espiritu, former dean of the De La Salle University - College of Computer Studies and Vibal educational technology consultant, gave a presentation on “UbD through ICTs”. He declared that “UbD is bound to fail” if teachers will not upgrade their ICT skills. He also revealed a number of educational internet sites and resources that the educators may utilize to efficiently integrate ICT in their teaching methods and activities.

Dr. Espiritu said that UbD is simply about designing lessons for better understanding. The key is to first gain competence in the area so teachers will have the confidence to choose the best topics and strategies for their students. ICTs provide excellent opportunities for teachers to prepare better for their classes, deliver media-rich content and assess students understanding. Teachers today must be able to use the same (ICT) tools that their students use to become more effective.

The Vibal Digital seminar-tour started last November 2009 had made a stop to 13 destinations all over the Philippines.
