Student's Digest Turns 30, Relevant as Ever
by Kat Bautista • June 17, 2010

Each edition of SD is hefty with content updates for Social Studies
Student’s Digest, the pioneering supplementary magazine for Social Studies published by Vibal affiliate SD Publications, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. First published Sulong Dunong and as a weekly periodical, the first issue came off the press on July 7, 1980. The full-color magazine now has appropriate editions for each grade and year level.

Student’s Digest is still very relevant after three decades because the content of each edition is carefully selected and written to suit its target readers. It keeps students updated on current social, political and economic issues.

The magazine is also a big help for teachers for them to engage their students into livelier yet deeper discussions of major Social Studies topics. There is a separate teacher's edition for grade school and high school that provide guide in teaching or integrating the major articles in the lessons.

The cover stories are on current issues relevant to the study of civics and culture, and HeKaSi for grade school and the areas of Social Studies in high school. The concept articles on relevant issues like women and children’s rights, and leadership are designed for deeper discussion of major topics. The rest of the content of each edition are all curriculum based yet very age-specific in presentation.

“We will continue making SD more relevant to the present times with the help of technology,” said editor Rick Castillo when asked what's new with the magazine. By that, he means SD as well as its sister publications S&T Digest and V2Day, are accessible at the tip of your fingers through the SD mags website and on Facebook. It is also accessible through mobile web where feedbacks, comments and suggestions from subscribers are addressed accordingly.

To commemorate its 30th year, SD is holding an online writing contest that is open to both student subscribers and non-subscribers in the intermediate (grades 4-6) and all high school levels. Participants should write on the theme “My Town, My Pride” as it also aims to provide a platform for young Filipinos to showcase their pride of place. For more info about the said contest, visit www.sdmags.net.

Incidentally, S&T Digest, the science and technology magazine of SD Publications is in its 15th year of publication. S&T Digest also has editions appropriate for each grade and year level. Published six times a year, S&T Digest features updates in S&T, condensed articles on major S&T concepts as well as easy to follow how-to articles on technologies.
