Recent studies suggest that a good number of Filipinos are at risk of suffering from osteoporosis, a disease of the bones that leads to fracture, stooping, and other complications that may result in immobility, long-term bed confinement, or even death.
Generally alluded to poor calcium and nutritional intake, other risk factors include age, excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, cigarette smoking, and family history.
But while osteoporosis is incurable, it is nonetheless preventable. With this in mind, Vibal Publishing recently played host to dairy brand Anlene® in conducting the Anlene® Bone Health Check, an international initiative designed to raise awareness on bone health.
Vibal president Mrs. Esther Vibal led the company`s employees as they lined up on Friday, October 14th, for a free bone ultrasound at the Vibal multipurpose hall. Trained professionals conducted assessments of the scans.
Liza, a graphic artist from the Digital Division, underscored the value of milk in maintaining healthy bones. "It`s important to take two glasses of milk every day," she said. "It really helps." Not surprisingly, results of her scan indicated that her risk of getting osteoporosis is low.
A fracture is usually the first indicator of osteoporosis, but other than that there are no clear symptoms of the disease. Treatments range from lifestyle modification to therapy and application of medications.
Meanwhile, risk to the dreaded disease can be significantly reduced by doing constant exercise, quitting smoking, minimizing alcohol consumption, and being conscious of one's dietary intake. (October 18, 2011)
